Banzai Cliff earned its name from the desperate cries of Japanese soldiers who charged headlong over its precipice during the Battle of Saipan in June 1944. Faced with the relentless advance of American forces, thousands of Japanese soldiers and civilians chose death over surrender, plunging to their demise from the sheer cliffs of Banzai.
